Why The Modern World Needs Human Rights

In the age of globalization, most people would normally say we no longer need human rights organizations. On the contrary, these world human rights organizations are not only essential but critical in this era.

Crimes against humanity and human rights violations are still rampant in this society and are unchecked and unaccounted for. The decade of 2010s saw major crimes being committed against political dissidents and minorities that are still looking for justice in the international system. The abduction of schoolgirls by Boko Haram highlighted the plight of young girls in Nigeria who suffer from the militant insurgency.

The conquest of Iraq and Syria by ISIS saw great repression of women by the militant outfits who proceeded to commit a mass genocide of the Yazidi minority. The Yazidi women were sold into sexual slavery and the Shias were massacred as heretics. The destruction they perpetrated against ancient artifacts also made it clear that the outfits wanted to remove traces of the minority group’s identity from the face of the earth. The human rights violations articles have pointed out that Yazidis still have not been compensated or given justice by their abusers.

The Rohingya genocide became another crisis where the Myanmar military regime committed grave atrocities and ethnic cleansing campaigns against their Muslim minorities. The crisis prompted human rights groups to take action against the guilty regime in the international courts and hold the dictatorship accountable.

The civil war in Syria which has been raging for over a decade has seen crimes against humanity being conducted by both the fascist Assad regime as well as the militant opposition. Usage of chemical weapons, bombardment, and torture that were considered practices in ancient history have now sprung up in other parts of the world.

These voiceless victims who have nobody to depend on are given a voice by international human rights organizations and activists who campaign for their plight. Their cases are represented in the international court of justice which prosecuted previous war criminals in the effort to do the same for war criminals of this age.

The point of these actions is not just to bring awareness to human rights abuses in the communities but also to deter other human rights abusers from adopting similar tyrannical measures to persecute their people. The necessity of these organizations remains important especially when many democratic societies hypocritically look the other way.
